HIA Award Winning Home/Renovation 2015

The wine cellar, situated underneath the alfresco shuttered area, was just part of a total renovation and extension of a 90s style home on the Gold Coast – and the result is a fresh modern look which has given it new life and brought it up to date with the indoor/outdoor lifestyle which is so popular and so suitable for our climate. DGH Builders were responsible for this project, which saw them awarded the Northern

NSW/Gold Coast Renovation of the Year at the 2015 HIA Awards.

The main focus of the project was the creation of a stylish indoor/outdoor room which opens off the existing living/kitchen/dining area. By extending outwards over the existing pool, DGH Builders has killed two birds with one clever stone – the wine cellar is sited where the pool used to be and, with some additional excavation, and the installation of a flight of stairs connecting it to the house, the owners now have a cool space to store their impressive wine collection.

Full width bi-fold windows in the kitchen ensure easy access to the outdoor dining area, which is cradled by the new L-shaped pool. Shutters on three sides of the indoor/outdoor room control light and breezes and protect against inclement weather as well as adding a modern and stylish look to the area. Continuity between indoors and outdoors is enhanced by sliding doors that open wide and welcoming between the two spaces, and by using the same tiles inside and out.

Builder Darren Gilbert of DGH Builders says, “Our aim at DGH is to treat our clients’ projects as if they are our own.

To be professional at all times and to respect other people’s property – it’s a very personal thing, to have a bunch of guys pulling your home apart!” It looks like he succeeded in all aspects of this large and daunting project! DGH Builders offer a full building service covering both new home constructions and renovations.

It’s a big ask to build an underground wine cellar in an existing house but, in this case, a clever and imaginative solution has delivered just what the owners dreamed of.
